The Township of Waterford is located in Michigan’s lower east side between Detroit and Flint. Waterford is in the center of Oakland County, with a population of over 72,000. To serve the people, Waterford has 715 miles of water and wastewater pipe, 19 production wells, 3 storage tanks, 11 treatment plants, and 63 sewer lifting stations.
In 2015 Waterford set out to update their controls and automation infrastructure. Perceptive Control Inc. (PCI) was awarded the project and set about to upgrade the original system. The initial project specification was limited to upgrading the current Command & Controls systems. PCI worked with Waterford and started to implement changes to the system in accordance with the project guidelines.

While the project was progressing, the limitations of the aging system did not solve all of Waterford’s issues. Specifically, MQTT, a data management system that uses an open-source programming method combined with assigning a broker and client relationship that allows easy transfer of information between devices.
PCI and the Waterford team reviewed several options and chose Ignition. Ignition was selected for its ease of use, unlimited expansion, and MQTT capability.
With its diversity of programming capability, PCI was able to move quickly into implementing the Ignition software and bring the Waterford project to life. PCI was able to implement this new process without loss of service to the community at any time, making the transition smooth.
With the new command infrastructure in place, Waterford has better control of the system, reliable data from remote sights, and state-of-the-art alerting tools to avert potential issues.
